Brick storefronts at 140-150 East Sixth Avenue, ca. 1910. The builder and the date of construction are currently unknown to me. If anyone has info, please let me know.

These wonderful photos, courtesy of Wendi Kottas Peterson, show the buildings in use as sort of salesmen's sample rooms, with hand-painted canvas signs tacked into the mortar above the front doors. Represented are the Wright, Barrett & Stilwell Co., the Gotzian Shoe Co., and Forman Ford & Co.

Historian and "Helena As She Was" website contribuor Patty Dean says about this business block:

"Interestingly, all 3 businesses in the brick buildings in the foreground were based in St. Paul (Gotzian Shoes, whose building was designed by Cass Gilbert who did the Montana Club & other Helena buildings, the Wright stationery store was also there) & Minneapolis in the case of Forman & Ford, a hardware company. Just another nice example of how tied Montana & Minnesota were & still are!"

The block housed numerous business over the decades. They were apparently demolished in 1992. If anyone can verify that date, please let me know.

Drinking a Toast in the Store
The ladies had fruit punch while the men had beer

Wendi Kottas Peterson writes:

"Raymond C. Grant was my Grandfather, but I never knew him because he died when my mom was young; my grandmother is Eva Gay ( Lord) Grant. My grandfather was a sales representative; he traveled the state, and was very successful, I understand."
