Mc Cracken's Golden Rule Store shared the 304-306 North Main address with Claflin's Furnitire House. When the J. C. Penney Co. bought out the Golden Rule, Claflin's moved to 17 West Sixth Avenue, where it would remain until a March 12, 1969 basement fire forced them to liquidate.

Stanley F. Newmack was Helena’s first J. C. Penney Manager, and remained at Store #1102 four years until his transfer to the Missoula J. C. Penney. Fred R. Little, the former Manager of the Grangeville, Idaho store was the next Helena Manager, and remained at Store #1102 almost thirty years, until his retirement in 1962.

Note on the left-hand side that the adjoining Ashby Block has been demolished to make way for the construction of the First National Bank Building (currently US Bank). The bank was completed in May of 1931.

"Cash Railway"

In this detail of the large interior view, we see part of the mechanism of the "cash railway" system that took money from the sales floor up to the cashier's office. The cashier would send change and receipts back down.

Managers at the downtown Helena J. C. Penney included George E. Allen from 1962 to 1973, Ivan A. Johnson from 1973 to 1977, Jean White from 1977 to 1980, and Stanley Johnson from 1980 to 1984.

Store #1102 closed on September 8, 1984 to relocate as J. C. Penney Store #2136-0 at 1600 11th Avenue in the Capital Hill Mall. The Capital Hill Mall J. C. Penney held its grand opening September 12, 1984 with Mr. Johnson remaining as Manager. Mr. Johnson managed Store #2136-0 until 1989. Subsequent Managers at this location have included Lee F. Rogers. The Helena store is currently managed by Truman A. Wood.
